There is a special mediation committee that is charged with working with the Commonwealth on the task of developing and implementing a remediation plan for specific parts of the property that were formerly contaminated with toxic materials. Bill Massaro and John Thompson are the main points of contact for the mediation committee. Negotiations with DCAMM had been held in private, but the results were presented to the public and agreed to by the Board of Selectmen in June, 2013. The results of the remediation plan include a more thorough cleanup of the contaminated areas of the MSH site than was originally proposed.
Another benefit to the town is that the water tower and wellfield that was formerly serving the hospital campus has been conveyed to the town for its use, and a new tower is under construction. This will help augment the town’s water supply.
